CHAPTER 10

“Rise and shine sleepy heads.”

Alexia cracked one eye open to find Deborah peeking through the door. She bolted upright, the sudden shift reminding her that she was still on the mend. Her hand shot up to massage her temple.

“Would it hurt to knock, Debs? We could have been naked.”

“That’s exactly what I was hoping for. Anywho, I did knock, but you two were passed out hard. Stayed up until the wee hours last night, did we?”

Alexia slouched back against the headrest. The truth was even worse than Deborah’s assumption. Running around with Damas all night. If Brock ever found out…

Her gaze shifted to him as his mouth stretched into a wide yawn. She always found it weird to see him groggy, the state was too vulnerable for his character. It was like Brock knew this too when he cleared his eyes from their glaze and the full force of his presence returned.

“Morning. How are you feeling?” he asked.

Finding no hidden agenda in his tone, her shoulders sagged in relief. He suspected nothing.

Guilt softened her voice. “Better.”

“That’s fab to hear,” Deborah butted in. “Because today’s the big day! I know you had a small setback yesterday, but really, it was just a bump on the head. No need to let that stop you from enjoying the best festival of the year.”

“Ah, not so fast,” Brock interrupted, propping himself up against the headboard beside Alexia. “She didn’t have a setback yesterday, she had a concussion. The doctor told her to take it easy for the next few days.”

Alexia’s eyes floated to the ceiling. Whoopsie.

When they descended, she attempted to pacify all parties.

“I’m feeling much better today, honestly.” She angled her shoulders at Brock first. “I know it’s important to take it easy, but Deborah has a point. A little stroll around town isn’t going to kill me. Besides, Mardis Gras is the whole reason we came.”

Deborah squealed in delight before Alexia snapped back to her.

“But I will not be drinking. And if I start to feel unwell, I’ll be on my way home in an instant. If that happens, I’m expecting zero resistance, zero complaints, and zero guilt trips. Capisce?”

Deborah’s head bounced up and down so enthusiastically she looked like a rag doll being shaken by a child. Before anyone could say a further word, she slithered out of the room, quitting while she was ahead.

Alexia rubbed her neck as she turned back to Brock. A stream of heated air escaped his nose.

“I don’t want you to go tonight.”

It was an effort to suppress a sigh. If he only knew that her injury should have been the least of his concerns. But maybe he was right. She couldn’t deny that she was nervous about the excursion as well. With the power of the sacred necklace fading, and the effects of the salt untested, it was a risky venture.

“What’s that?” Brock asked, breaking through her thoughts.

Shit.

She’d been thumbing her necklace subconsciously. Her hand dropped from the dime.

“Where’d you get that?”

There was a threatening edge to his tone that raised the hairs on her arms.
